When John Lowell graduated from the University of Oregon his commonsense plan was to find a job and start paying off his student loans. But John's father, an eccentric poet and Zen practitioner in San Francisco, suggested something else: why not expand his horizons a bit before entering the world of honest toil? The elder Lowell had just a few years previously travelled through Europe and made some sustaining money picking olives in Greece. And this suggestion was to send John on a transformative ten month odyssey through Europe that changed him forever.
